The White House has issued a proclamation, declaring September to be National Recovery Month in the United States. National Recovery Month was instituted in 1989 and endeavors to celebrate and support substance use treatment and recovery efforts in communities across the country.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently published a Recovery Month Toolkit. This toolkit provides promotional resources including social media shareables, virtual backgrounds, hashtag guidance, and more, to raise community awareness and support those in recovery. SAMHSA’s recovery web page highlights the severity of the country’s behavioral health crisis and provides diverse recovery resources. It estimates that just over 50 million American adults are recovering from a substance use and/or mental health challenge and outlines the four major dimensions of recovery: health, home, purpose, and community.
Refer to the AHRQ Academy event calendar to find recovery-related events happening in September, such as “Mastering the Art of Recovery – From Lived Experience to Professional Impact” and “Recovery Management Checkups: An Innovative Approach to Long-Term Substance Use Care Management”. For further reading, the AHRQ Academy’s Literature Collection has a robust offering of articles related to recovery.
