Through the federal Rural Health Transformation Program, many states are preparing to invest in community health worker (CHW) workforce initiatives to strengthen rural health systems and expand access to essential services. CHWs are trusted, non-clinical health professionals who draw on their lived experience and community relationships to provide health education, care navigation, and social and emotional support. Strong evidence demonstrates the impact of CHWs in improving health and social outcomes, including access to primary care services, leading to more CHWs being integrated into interdisciplinary teams within health systems, clinics, community-based organizations, and health plans.

This webinar, a product of the Center for Health Care Strategies’ (CHCS) Evidence-to-Action Hub, will feature CHW programs in Oregon, Tennessee, and Virginia, to highlight lessons on expanding access to CHW services in rural communities. Speakers will discuss strategies for supporting these programs, including considerations for program design; training, certification, and accreditation; and engagement with CHWs and key stakeholders.

Contingency management (CM) is an evidence-based intervention that uses incentives to encourage positive recovery behaviors among individuals with substance use disorders. Research shows that CM can improve abstinence, treatment engagement, and medication adherence, including medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). It is particularly effective for stimulant use disorder, for which no Food and Drug Administration-approved medications currently exist.

This Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS) webinar, made possible by The Pew Charitable Trusts, will bring together state leaders and experts to discuss how they are exploring, launching, and scaling CM across various policy and funding environments. Speakers from three states — Delaware, New Jersey, and Wisconsin — will share considerations related to state roles, provider engagement, operational design, and financing approaches, including Medicaid Section 1115 demonstration waivers and State Opioid Response Grants. The discussion will highlight common challenges, emerging solutions, and lessons for states at all stages of CM development.

This 75-minute webinar is designed for states that are beginning to explore CM, those piloting limited CM programs, and those seeking to scale and spread CM statewide, as well as other stakeholders seeking to promote CM.

Join the Primary Care Collaborative (PCC) for a conversation exploring policy solutions that can improve quality of care for seniors and generate savings by increasing primary care participation in ACOs.

Accountable care organizations (ACOs) have been shown to generate greater savings for Medicare—presumably, because of better care management and better outcomes. And primary care-led ACOs outperform their peers, generating nearly double the savings of others.

Unfortunately, the share of ACOs led by primary care teams is shrinking, preventing Medicare from leveraging the full potential of these organizations. In this webinar, participants explore potential strategies to improve primary care’s participation in ACOs.

The conversation will discuss approaches in MSSP; the new LEAD model; and other ways to help more primary care practices embrace and succeed in ACO models—leading to better outcomes, lower costs and healthier communities.

The Certificate in Advanced Mental Health Care in Primary Care course was developed for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who work in primary care and want to increase their confidence, knowledge, skill, and capacity to treat mental health conditions. Created by an interdisciplinary group of experts, faculty members are practicing clinicians and educators in primary care with extensive experience at the complex intersections of psychiatry, psychology, social health, and primary health care.

The course addresses the real-life, complex patient presentations we see in primary care every day. Thematically integrated throughout is content that acknowledges and responds to the daily challenges of providing care to populations facing structural barriers to care, with emphasis on the critical role of chronic stress exposure, trauma, and adversity in the development of mental health conditions.

The course includes the role of psychopharmacology in primary care, with content dedicated to providing clinicians with fundamental knowledge about all major psychotropic medication classes and detailed information on how to use individual medications based on different patient factors, co-occurring conditions, and presenting symptoms. Participants will learn how to select the right medication, how to dose it, and how to safely monitor its effects. They will also receive comprehensive guides to diagnostic assessment of different conditions, patient-centered communication and engagement, and counseling skills that medical clinicians can utilize in their daily practice.

The need for better Suicide Care is ever present as is the need for clear pathways for billing those services. Organizations like the Suicide Care Research Center (SCRC) and Zero Suicide have created tip sheets and guidance on how to finance Suicide Care. However, the landscape is changing - the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) recently created new billing codes (for safety planning and post-discharge) which have yet to be tried at a lot of sites. In the primary care setting, CMS has also developed Collaborative Care billing, but it isn't clear to many providers which codes to use when serving a patient experiencing suicidal thoughts or behavior.

As new interventions for suicide care are developed, it is critical to know how they will be integrated into the workflow and, particularly, how to bill them effectively. The SCRC has been co-designing a number of new interventions with clinicians and people and families with lived experience of suicidal thoughts or behavior. For them to be used, this has to be done with pragmatic issues like financing in mind.

Join the AIMS Center and Drs. Ratzliff and Comtois as they present existing financing options. They will then apply these options by walking through two case scenarios based on new SCRC technology-based interventions and review strategies for billing for these services in outpatient medical settings. This will be followed by a facilitated discussion.

Substance use among Veterans and Service Members continues to be a critical behavioral health challenge that intersects with trauma, pain management, and the transition to civilian life. Veterans are at significantly higher risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD) as compared to non-veterans. Veterans with SUD are also more likely to suffer from a mental illness or experience homelessness (Lloyd, Prakash, and Terplan, 2024). Federal, state and local agencies are continually working to reduce the prevalence of SUD among Service Members, Veterans and their families (SMVF)

This webinar will explore evidence-informed strategies, emerging trends, and innovative models that support recovery and resilience among SMVF. Presenters will discuss the importance of coordinated care across systems including the Department of Veterans Affairs, state health authorities, and community-based organizations. The presenters will highlight programs that are improving access to effective substance use treatment and long-term recovery support.

Join for this conversation as we bring together leaders from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the SAFE Project, and the Oregon Health Authority to share practical tools, lessons learned, and resources for those working to address substance use and promote wellness across the military and Veteran continuum of care.
