In October 2021, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center announced a strategy refresh to chart a path for the next ten years of value-based care in the United States.
"Background on the CMS Innovation Center 2021 Strategy Refresh – Putting All Patients at the Center of Care
Vision: A health care system that achieves equitable outcomes through high quality, affordable, person-centered care.
The CMS Innovation Center, having taken stock of lessons learned from its first decade and 50+ models, is charting a path for the next ten years of value-based care -- one that will improve the health system for all patients.
The result: a strategy refresh that drives our delivery system toward meaningful transformation, including focusing on equity in everything we do, paying for health care based on value to the patient instead of the volume of services provided, and delivering person-centered care that meets people where they are.”
On November 7, 2022, they released an update on the implementation of this strategy, outlining areas of focus for 2023 and beginning to measure progress of five strategic objectives: driving accountable care, advancing health equity, supporting innovating, addressing affordability, and partnering to achieve system transformation. They also released a white paper to outline their strategic direction.
On March 31, 2023, from 2:30 – 3:30 PM ET, the CMS Innovation Center will host a virtual listening session on their strategic approach to person-centered care and their commitment to patient partnership across the model lifecycle.
