The Certificate in Advanced Mental Health Care in Primary Care course was developed for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who work in primary care and want to increase their confidence, knowledge, skill, and capacity to treat mental health conditions. Created by an interdisciplinary group of experts, faculty members are practicing clinicians and educators in primary care with extensive experience at the complex intersections of psychiatry, psychology, social health, and primary health care.

The course addresses the real-life, complex patient presentations we see in primary care every day. Thematically integrated throughout is content that acknowledges and responds to the daily challenges of providing care to populations facing structural barriers to care, with emphasis on the critical role of chronic stress exposure, trauma, and adversity in the development of mental health conditions.

The course includes the role of psychopharmacology in primary care, with content dedicated to providing clinicians with fundamental knowledge about all major psychotropic medication classes and detailed information on how to use individual medications based on different patient factors, co-occurring conditions, and presenting symptoms. Participants will learn how to select the right medication, how to dose it, and how to safely monitor its effects. They will also receive comprehensive guides to diagnostic assessment of different conditions, patient-centered communication and engagement, and counseling skills that medical clinicians can utilize in their daily practice.

Substance use among Veterans and Service Members continues to be a critical behavioral health challenge that intersects with trauma, pain management, and the transition to civilian life. Veterans are at significantly higher risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD) as compared to non-veterans. Veterans with SUD are also more likely to suffer from a mental illness or experience homelessness (Lloyd, Prakash, and Terplan, 2024). Federal, state and local agencies are continually working to reduce the prevalence of SUD among Service Members, Veterans and their families (SMVF)

This webinar will explore evidence-informed strategies, emerging trends, and innovative models that support recovery and resilience among SMVF. Presenters will discuss the importance of coordinated care across systems including the Department of Veterans Affairs, state health authorities, and community-based organizations. The presenters will highlight programs that are improving access to effective substance use treatment and long-term recovery support.

Join the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for this conversation as we bring together leaders from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the SAFE Project, and the Oregon Health Authority to share practical tools, lessons learned, and resources for those working to address substance use and promote wellness across the military and Veteran continuum of care.

The need for better Suicide Care is ever present as is the need for clear pathways for billing those services. Organizations like the Suicide Care Research Center (SCRC) and Zero Suicide have created tip sheets and guidance on how to finance Suicide Care. However, the landscape is changing - the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) recently created new billing codes (for safety planning and post-discharge) which have yet to be tried at a lot of sites. In the primary care setting, CMS has also developed Collaborative Care billing, but it isn't clear to many providers which codes to use when serving a patient experiencing suicidal thoughts or behavior.

As new interventions for suicide care are developed, it is critical to know how they will be integrated into the workflow and, particularly, how to bill them effectively. The SCRC has been co-designing a number of new interventions with clinicians and people and families with lived experience of suicidal thoughts or behavior. For them to be used, this has to be done with pragmatic issues like financing in mind.

Join the AIMS Center and Drs. Ratzliff and Comtois as they present existing financing options. They will then apply these options by walking through two case scenarios based on new SCRC technology-based interventions and review strategies for billing for these services in outpatient medical settings. This will be followed by a facilitated discussion.

This webinar, hosted by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, explores how tobacco and nicotine use disorder is often positioned outside the core language, workflows, and expectations of substance use disorder (SUD) services, even as recovery-oriented care has matured across other substances. While addiction is increasingly understood as a chronic, treatable condition with nonlinear trajectories, tobacco and nicotine cessation is frequently framed as a secondary issue or deferred concern rather than a core clinical priority. The result is misalignment across screening practices, clinical accountability, and recovery narratives, with tobacco use remaining normalized within systems intended to support long-term wellbeing.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center is hosting a webinar on March 5 for the Innovation in Behavioral Health (IBH) Model’s Cohort II Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) that will provide an in-depth review of the model’s Cohort II NOFO.

The IBH Model for Cohort II is a seven-year, voluntary service delivery and payment model beginning in January 2027, focusing on advancing and promoting integrated care in behavioral health settings. The IBH Model will test the impact of a value-based payment model aligned across Medicaid and Medicare that supports an integrated care delivery framework in specialty behavioral health organizations and settings for adult Medicaid, Medicare, and dual-eligible beneficiaries with moderate to severe mental health conditions and/or substance use disorders.

The IBH NOFO webinar will provide important information on the model payment methodology, federal award details, and the application process. Attendees will also hear from Cohort I state awardees (Michigan, New York, and South Carolina) about their insights and experiences in the model and engage in a live question-and-answer segment with the model team. This webinar will provide an important opportunity to expand and deepen your understanding of the model and how it may be leveraged in your state to transform behavioral health for Medicaid beneficiaries, as well as for Medicare and dual-eligible beneficiaries for states that participate in the Medicare arm of the model.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, with provisional estimates of over 48,821 deaths in 2024 (CDC). Substance misuse is a significant risk factor for suicide, and people who use opioids are at increased risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

This webinar, hosted by the Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS) will provide an overview of risk and protective factors associated with suicidality and substance use disorder (SUD)/opioid use disorder (OUD) and will outline effective organizational and clinical prevention and intervention strategies for individuals experiencing SUD/OUD.

Join for this conversation as we bring together leaders from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the SAFE Project, and the Oregon Health Authority to share practical tools, lessons learned, and resources for those working to address substance use and promote wellness across the military and Veteran continuum of care.
