Physicians are required to apply to the Drug Enforcement Agency for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine, one of three medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid use disorder. Those physicians who want to treat more than 30 patients at any one time, must take the 8-hour waiver course. This is PART 1 of the 8-hour waiver eligibility training.
To treat more than 30 patients, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) (NP/CNM/CNS/CRNA) and Physician Assistants (PAs) must complete 24 hours of specialized training to prescribe buprenorphine. The training includes 8 hours of waiver training and an additional 16 hours of training.
