Substance Misuse Through the Lens of Black History Month

Date

In celebration of Black History Month, the Prevention Technology Transfer Center Network (PTTC) curated a list of resources to support work with the Black and African American Communities. These resources include webinars, guides, and various tools and relate to health equity, structural racism, and diversity and cultural competency in substance use prevention.

The PTTC also published an article on Substance Misuse Through the Lens of Black History, which was written by The BACH Group - Earl N. Benjamin-Robinson, DrHSc, CPH and Michael L. Benjamin-Robinson, DSW, LCSW-BACS. They recommend four actions-practices to help work toward eliminating or reducing social stressors for Black Americans and other populations experiencing unfair, unjust, and avoidable behavioral health or substance use disparities.

The Integration Academy’s Topic Brief on Health Equity provides an overview on the role of behavioral health integration in reducing disparities in health and healthcare, and practical strategies and resources for ensuring integrated practices are advancing health equity. Items related to social determinants of health are available in the Substance Use and Unhealthy Alcohol Use Tools & Resources Collections, and references on healthcare disparities are available in the Literature Collection.
