Managing Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Primary Care - New NIAAA Resources

Date

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and we’re sharing two new resources the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has released for managing unhealthy alcohol use in primary care.

  1. The Healthcare Professional’s Core Resource on Alcohol provides foundational knowledge on unhealthy alcohol use, information on alcohol-related health issues, and strategies for prevention and treatment. The Core includes:
    1. Free CME/CE credits that can help primary care providers to identify and support their many patients who have alcohol-related health concerns.
  2. The NIAAA Alcohol Treatment Navigator can help people locate quality providers; recognize quality, evidence-based care; and find trusted sources to search for specialty programs, therapists, and physicians. Key links within the navigator include:
    1. What credentials should I look for when seeking an alcohol treatment provider?
    2. Search for therapists with addiction specialties
    3. Q&As for therapists with addiction specialties
