SCOPE of Pain is a series of continuing medical education/continuing nursing education activities designed to help you safely and effectively manage patients with acute and/or chronic pain, when appropriate, with opioid analgesics.

This module features more than 60 case-based questions on pain management, safer prescribing of opioid analgesics, and the recognition and treatment of opioid use disorder. To ensure the development of high-quality, unbiased content in this module, we partnered with experts at Boston University School of Medicine's Safer/Competent Opioid Prescribing Education (SCOPE of Pain) program.

Describes risk factors for the development of opioid-related adverse events and how to mitigate these risks. Provides an overview of adverse events, including their symptoms and how to manage them.

Provides examples of patient behaviors that may indicate prescription medication abuse or addiction and behaviors that may appear aberrant but are likely to be part of the normal process of stabilizing a patient's pain condition.

Includes when to consider long-term opioid therapy and how to reassess the need for more opioids on a return visit. Provides additional information regarding the evidence about using opioid and nonopioid therapies, evaluating risk of harm or misuse, and assessing pain and function using the PEG scale.

Provides pharmacists with information about prescription opioid use in the United States, the role of pharmacists as part of the pain management team and in preventing opioid use disorder, and communication with patients.
