Treatment of Stimulant Use Disorders: A SAMHSA Evidence-Based Resource

Date

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a guide (PDF, 17 MB) to support healthcare providers, systems, and communities seeking to treat stimulant use disorders. This guide presents four evidence-based programs and practices that address treatment of stimulant use and supports SAMHSA’s Strategic Plan Objective 3.4 to:

“Support the identification and adoption of evidence-based practices, programs, and policies that prevent substance use, increase provision of substance use disorders treatment, and enable individuals to achieve long-term recovery.”

Treating addiction to stimulants is critical but especially challenging. Unlike opioids, the Food and Drug Administration has not approved any medications for stimulant use disorders. This guide describes relevant research findings, examines best practices, identifies knowledge gaps and implementation challenges, and offers useful resources with the goal of distilling this research into recommendations for practice. It also provides examples of how clinicians and other providers use these practices in their programs.
