Cultural Competency – New Guides and Other Resources

Date

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) just released several new Best Practice Resource Guides on advancing equity for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA NH/PI) communities in COVID-19 response efforts. This series was created in accordance with the Presidential Referendum Condemning and Combating Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. All three documents include best practices, strategies, and actions in the context of the Federal COVID-19 response.

The Language Access Resource Guide is meant to help meet the specific language needs and preferences of AA and NH/PI communities. The Data Disaggregation Resource Guide is meant to improve the collection, use, and reporting of disaggregated data on AA and NH/PI populations. The Community Engagement Resource Guide is meant to develop and sustain partnerships with AA and NH/PI community members, community-based organizations, and coalitions to ensure that a diversity of voices and perspectives inform and contribute to the creation and implementation of COVID-19 response activities.

The Integration Academy has topic briefs on both Health Equity and COVID-19 in the context of behavioral health integration.  See also the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration’s  Treatment Improvement Protocol on Improving Cultural Competence, and HHS’s free online training on Improving Cultural Competency for Behavioral Health Professionals.
