Screening for Substance Use Disorders/Opioid Use Disorder

This Advisory is based on TIP 31, Screening and Assessing Adolescents for Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and TIP 32, Treatment of Adolescents with SUDs. It includes recommendations for engaging adolescents in SUD risk assessment, screening, and treatment.

This Advisory is based on TIP 27, Comprehensive Case Management for Substance Abuse Treatment. It surveys the underlying principles and models of case management, discusses reasons substance use disorder (SUD) treatment providers might consider implementing or expanding the use of case management, and lists some case management-related resources and tools.

This guide presents three evidence based practices that engage and improve outcomes for youth and young adults with co-occurring SED/SMI and substance misuse or SUD. These approaches will assist clinicians, behavioral health organizations, primary care providers, schools, insurers, transformation experts, and policy makers to understand, select, and implement evidence-based interventions that support youth and young adult mental health. These include psychosocial interventions, family behavioral therapy, medication, proactive outreach, and use of web-based and other technologies.

This Advisory is based on the SAMHSA's Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 42, Substance Use Disorder Treatment for People With Co-Occurring Disorders. It highlights strategies for counselors and administrators to properly screen, assess, diagnose, and manage the treatment of individuals with CODs.

The ASAM Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder Course provides eight hours of required education to qualify for the waiver to prescribe buprenorphine in an office-based setting and covers essential information for providers to identify, assess, diagnose, and manage patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). The course covers the latest information on medications and treatments for OUD.

The PRO screens pregnant women for psychosocial risk factors that may affect a healthy pregnancy or birth or impede a woman’s ability to comply with prenatal care recommendations.

The Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use (TAPS) Tool consists of a combined screening component (TAPS-1) followed by a brief assessment (TAPS-2) for those who screen positive. Paper versions of the tools are included.
