Findings from Unhealthy Alcohol Use Initiative

Date

In 2019, AHRQ launched the EvidenceNOW: Managing UAU Initiative to help primary care practices increase efforts to address patients’ unhealthy alcohol use (UAU). As the fourth-leading leading cause of preventable death, UAU is a key public health issue that can be identified and treated in primary care settings. UAU is associated with a wide range of adverse consequences related to physical and mental health, and social and economic concerns.

The initiative funded grantee projects to disseminate effective quality improvement strategies to increase screening, management, and treatment of UAU in primary care through evidence-based screening and brief intervention for UAU and medication-assisted therapy for alcohol use disorder. On June 27, 2024, AHRQ hosted a webinar that presented findings from the national evaluation and findings from grantee projects in Colorado and Virginia. Watch a recording of the webinar on demand.

The AHRQ Academy aims to increase awareness of valuable behavioral health resources and findings from EvidenceNOW initiatives, among those who would benefit from them. These include the Managing Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Primary Care Tools & Resources Collection, Environmental Scan Final Report: Managing Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Primary Care, and EvidenceNOW: Managing UAU Initiative: National Evaluation and Grantee Findings Webinar available on the Academy website.
