6 Tips From the MAT for OUD Playbook

Date

The AHRQ Academy website recently released the Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder Playbook (MAT for OUD Playbook), a practical guide for implementing MAT in primary care and other ambulatory care settings. This interactive web-based product provides the latest guidance, tools, and resources that address key aspects of MAT implementation and applies to any array of MAT services.

As providers work toward MAT implementation, it is important to keep in mind paths and obstacles to avoid. Awareness of what not to do can help an organization succeed in implementing MAT and ultimately enhance patient care and health outcomes. To help educate practices on this topic, the AHRQ Academy has created a Tip Sheet (PDF—154Kb) describing tips to consider when implementing MAT:

  1. Don’t underestimate the need to address stigma related to addiction.
  2. Don’t create unnecessary barriers to treatment.
  3. Don’t take a “one-size-fits-all” approach to patient care.
  4. Don’t punish patients for poor behavior or continued substance use.
  5. Don’t be discouraged by regulations regarding information sharing.
  6. Don’t expect all patients to make progress at the same rate.
