Collaborating with Schools in Pediatric Primary Care

Primary care clinicians often need to work with schools to meet the needs of their patients; however, more than 40% of providers report frequent challenges when doing so. This course, hosted by the REACH Institute, equips primary care providers with the knowledge and skills to collaborate with school personnel and families to support the mental health and educational needs of their patients.

This course has two components:

• A dynamic full-day workshop focused on building knowledge, skills, and confidence to partner with educators, through case vignettes and small-group practice.
• Four case-based group learning calls over two months in which participants present cases from their practice to solidify their learning and put it into practice. Each call lasts one hour.

Participants can earn up to 10.25 CME credits for both components.

Course Goals
Participants learn to effectively partner with school systems in caring for youth. Course goals include the following:

• Develop skill and comfort in helping families to navigate school supports such as 504 Accommodation Plan, and Individualized Educational Program (IEP)
• Empower families with effective strategies to address absenteeism, school suspensions,  and school refusal
• Support families in navigating school disciplinary practices
• Use effective billing and coding strategies for school-related clinical work
