As rates of stress, anxiety, and depression increase, the need for understanding resilience, or the ability to withstand crisis, may help equip individuals to navigate stress across the lifespan. To examine how neurobiological insights on stress can build resilience, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's (NASEM's) Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders, in collaboration with the Forum on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders, will host this hybrid public workshop.
Speakers with expertise in neuroscience, psychology, neurodevelopment, public health, and education will explore the neurobiological mechanisms of stress and resilience, the role of childhood neurodevelopment and lifelong neuroplasticity, and effective approaches for optimizing resilience. Discussions will also address opportunities to inform public health programs and education on how to promote resilience.
