The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA’s) Center for Financing Reform and Innovation (CFRI) is releasing a report, Financing Strategies for Community-Based Organizations along with hosting a webinar to discuss findings of the report with experts from community-based organizations (CBOs) and the important role CBOs play in communities.
CBOs are local public or private nonprofit, peer-run, or faith-based organizations that address various needs of their community by providing wide-spread services and resources. Although CBOs play an important role in communities, as organizations, they typically have smaller budgets, limited funding sources, less government funding, smaller revenues, and less unrestricted funding than larger systems such as hospitals, clinics, and for-profit organizations.
This report and webinar examine the financial landscape and challenges faced by CBOs that provide essential mental health and substance use services to underserved communities. CBOs, often led by and serving people from these communities, are vital in addressing health care gaps. However, they face significant financial hurdles, particularly in securing recurring and unrestricted funding.
