AOAAM: Opioid Prescribing by Dentists and Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons - Hot Topics in Addiction Medicine (Part 6)

-

This lecture is Part 6 of a six-hour webinar series from the American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine (AOAAM) and Opioid Response Network (ORN) that will explore issues related to opioid and methamphetamine use disorders, with particular attention to special populations (e.g., adolescents, pregnant and post-partum individuals, people using cannabis) and in special settings (e.g., emergency departments, dental offices). Additionally, recognizing, diagnosing, and treating opioid use disorder, psychostimulant toxicity, and psychostimulant use disorder will be discussed.

This course will give an overview of trends and trajectories of opioid prescribing by dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFS) in the US. Further, we will describe the consequences of opioid prescribing for dental procedures. At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees should be able to:

  1. Describe the decreasing trends in opioid prescribing by US dentists and OMFS
  2. Understand the variations in opioid prescribing trajectories by US dentists and OMFS
  3. Discuss the risk of adverse events and persistent opioid use following opioid prescriptions for dental procedures
  4. Apply strategies non-dental providers can implement to manage dental pain in medical settings
