CalAIM, launched in 2022, is California’s Medicaid transformation initiative designed to provide members with more coordinated, person-centered, equitable care. Community Supports, a foundational feature of CalAIM, includes 14 optional managed care services that address health-related social needs. Some Community Supports, like those addressing housing insecurity, were widely implemented during CalAIM’s first year, while other services received less traction.
This Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS) webinar, made possible by the California Health Care Foundation, will highlight two less-often implemented Community Supports: (1) day habilitation programs for people experiencing homelessness that focus on building the skills necessary for community participation, maintaining interpersonal relationships, and daily living; and (2) sobering centers that provide a safe place for individuals who are found to be publicly intoxicated and would otherwise be transported to the emergency department or jail. The webinar will spotlight the experiences of one day habilitation provider and one sobering center in Orange County, and highlight their partnerships with a local Medicaid managed care plan to successfully expand services to Medi-Cal members.
This webinar is first in a series, CalAIM Community Supports Early Adopters, that is spotlighting early adopters of less commonly offered Community Supports to help increase uptake of these critical services. Lessons can inform stakeholders in California and others across the country seeking to improve health care services for people with complex health and social needs through similar in lieu of services.
