Indian Health Services (IHS)

Provides federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives as part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Its role stems from the government-to-government relationship established in 1787, based on the U.S. Constitution and reinforced by treaties, laws, and court decisions. As the primary federal health care provider and advocate for Indian communities, IHS aims to improve their health status through a comprehensive service delivery system.
