Pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorders (SUD) often face complex and compounding barriers to care, including stigma, fragmented services, and a lack of tailored supports. Integrated, trauma-informed models are essential to addressing these challenges and improving both maternal and family outcomes. This webinar, hosted by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, will spotlight Moms Do Care, an innovative initiative of the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services, which provides holistic support to pregnant and postpartum women with SUD or those in recovery. The Moms Do Care program connects women to critical services—including prenatal and postpartum medical care, counseling, case management, and linkage to housing and social supports—through a person-centered and trust-building approach. A cornerstone of the program is its use of peer support specialists—women with lived experience who play a transformative role in engaging participants, providing mentorship, and helping clients navigate care systems.Presenters will share the program’s development, implementation, and lessons learned, highlighting how this model improves maternal retention in care, enhances birth outcomes, and fosters long-term family stability. The session will also address broader workforce challenges that impact the sustainability and expansion of similar programs, including limited pipelines of trained professionals, salary disparities, credentialing barriers, and staff burnout—underscoring how peer roles can serve as both a solution and a bridge to more equitable, effective care.

Substance use contributes to a range of complex public health challenges. While synthetic opioids remain central to the overdose crisis, deaths related to stimulants and alcohol are escalating. Beyond these medical concerns, the broader ripple effects are often overlooked, particularly the role of substance use in child neglect, family disruption and interpersonal violence. In today’s fragmented systems, these impacts are frequently addressed in silos, leading to gaps in care and missed opportunities for prevention and interventionThe National Council for Mental Wellbeing, with support from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the Opioid Response Network, has developed a dynamic, four-part, interactive series for behavioral health providers and system leaders. The series explores the current fragmented landscape of substance use care and envisions an innovative, fully integrated future. Each session dives into one key sector, including health care, child welfare and schools, highlighting real-world challenges, cross-system opportunities and forward-thinking strategies to create a unified continuum of care that meets individuals and families where they are. A certificate of completion will be provided for attending the entire series.Session 2 will discuss the critical role schools play in prevention, early detection, and wraparound support for students impacted by familial or personal substance use, and explore partnerships that break down referral barriers.

Participants will receive an in depth training on how to navigate the Substance Use Disorders section of the DSM-5 TR. Training on how to ask questions about substances to elicit honest information from the client, how to recognize "red flags" that can help assess problematic use potential and the chance that the problem has progressed, and details on Dual Diagnosis labeling, Substance induced disorders will be given. Particular attention will be paid to special implications when diagnosing Opiate Use Disorder and Sedative Hypnotic Disorder. Specific tools and techniques will be shared, giving the beginner diagnoser to the advanced new tips on how to engage and label this population with an increased accuracy that will aid tremendously in treatment implications.Learning Objectives:Participants will learn the 'red flags' that make an individual more likely to progress to a substance use disorder, aiding the diagnostician in the process of labeling more accurately and efficiently.Participants will learn specific tools and techniques on how to ask the questions related to alcohol and drug use that can help to elicit more honest feedback.Participants will get an in-depth training on how to navigate special implications in diagnosing opiates and sedative hypnotics.Diagnosing Dual Diagnoses vs. diagnosing substance induced mental health diagnoses will be covered and discussed.

The session, hosted by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, will explore how to integrate Lifestyle Medicine and Shared Medical Appointments (SMAs) into Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) which can transform them into the Partner, Employer, and Provider of Choice—while expanding health access and improving chronic disease outcomes in underserved communities.Through strategic partnerships between FQHCs, academic institutions, and local farmers, this model addresses multiple barriers to care, including health literacy, time constraints, and access to nutritious food. SMAs create a group-based, billable care model that allows providers to reach multiple patients simultaneously in a supportive, educational environment. The visits foster peer connection and social support—crucial components in sustainable behavior change and chronic disease management.Academic partners play a pivotal role by involving healthcare students in SMA delivery. Under supervision, students help facilitate group visits, support health literacy initiatives, and provide coaching on lifestyle interventions, such as plant-forward diets, physical activity, and stress reduction. Partnerships with local farmers enhance this effort by supplying fresh, nutrient-rich produce, giving patients access to the tools they need to make healthier choices.Attendees will gain insight into how this collaborative, scalable model improves patient outcomes, reduces provider burnout, and creates a community-centered approach to chronic disease prevention. Practical guidance will be shared on implementing SMAs, engaging partners, and leveraging resources to make Lifestyle Medicine the foundation of care in FQHCs.

This July, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline celebrates its third birthday. 988 has been an invaluable resource, answering millions of calls, texts and chats, from people seeking support during a mental health crisis. It has also driven a historic movement to build systems of crisis care across the country to support those seeking help. In particular, state legislators have partnered with advocates and community members to embrace and implement the full vision for crisis care – a system where everyone experiencing a crisis has someone to contact, someone to respond, and a safe place to go. Register today for the National Alliance on Mental Illness's (NAMI’s) next Virtual Town Hall to recap the first three years of 988 and celebrate the state efforts to expand access to 988 and crisis care.During this Virtual Town Hall, attendees will:Hear about NAMI’s vision for crisis care and our hope for advocacy moving forward.Learn from NAMI State Organizations about their successes advocating for 988 legislation and supporting local implementation.Lessons and strategies for sustaining momentum and ensuring that crisis care remains one of the bi partisan issues of our time.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2019, only 10% of adults in the U.S with any substance use disorder (SUD) received treatment in part because effective evidence-based treatments for SUDs can be difficult to access in many communities. Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) help address this issue, delivering easily accessible outpatient behavioral health care and SUD treatment through activities including expanded operating hours, same-day appointments, outreach to sidelined populations and moving service delivery beyond clinic walls to reach people in their homes and in the community.GRAND Mental Health operates 31 clinics and the largest residential substance use treatment center in Oklahoma. By creating immediate access to quality care in the least restrictive environments, GRAND saw 30,000 clients statewide in 2024 and a 93.1% reduction in SUD-related hospitalizations in 2021.In this webinar, hosted by the Providers Clinical Support System – Medications for Opioid Use Disorders (PCSS-MOUD), attendees will:Discuss the value of the CCBHC model in delivering MOUD services and sustaining OUD treatment.Describe the successful programmatic and service delivery attributes of a CCBHC Crisis Center that focuses on SUD and a collaboration between a CCBHC and residential SUD treatment facility.Outline how CCBHCs implement evaluation processes, including tracking service models and utilizing data.Webinar attendees will earn 1 hour of CEU credits for this session.
