Opioid & Substance Use Resources

The AHRQ Academy has developed several resources for providers treating opioid use disorder in primary care practices.

Implementing Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder in Rural Primary Care: Environmental Scan

MAT for OUD Environmental Scan, Volume 1

This environmental scan describes the significant challenges and barriers that may limit access to MAT services in rural primary care settings, including those related to workforce, stigma, logistics, financing, and policy. The report also highlights essential characteristics of effective MAT practices and identifies three innovative models of care that may help overcome challenges to implementing MAT services in rural primary care settings.

MAT for OUD Environmental Scan, Volume 2: Tools and Resources

This document includes more than 350 tools and resources available to providers, patients, and communities to help implement MAT in rural primary care and other ambulatory care settings. These tools are categorized by topic and address the full spectrum of needs for patients with or at risk for OUD, including OUD awareness and education prevention, MAT training and education, MAT implementation, and overdose. Although the tools were not all created specifically for rural primary care practices, they are potentially useful in those and other settings. This replaces the previous version of Volume 2  that was released in 2017.

Medication-Assisted Treatment Tools and Resources Collection

The MAT Tools & Resources Collection is a searchable database of tools and resources available to help those who offer or use MAT services. The tools can be filtered by a number of factors, including use, topic, format, audience, and terms of use.

Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder Playbook

The AHRQ Academy developed the Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder Playbook (referred to as the MAT for OUD Playbook), a practical guide for implementing MAT in primary care and other ambulatory care settings. While the Playbook aims to help providers in rural primary care, the information in the Playbook should apply to other ambulatory care settings. This interactive, web-based product has the latest guidance, tools, and resources that address key aspects of implementation.

Literature on Opioids and Substance Use

The Academy Literature Collection contains more than 1,000 resources related to opioids and substance use, including journal articles, reports, clinical guidelines, fact sheets, and web resources.

Primary Care Medication-Assisted Treatment Grantees

In 2016, AHRQ invested in a grant initiative to support rural primary care practices in delivering MAT. The AHRQ Academy supports these Primary Care MAT Grantees by offering technical assistance and developing and disseminating resources and information about MAT in rural primary care practices. Using the lessons learned from these projects, the Academy serves as a platform to distribute findings at the end of the grantees' research.
