The DoD Fosters an Integrated Approach to Wellness

In efforts “to improve the health and wellness of the entire defense community,” the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has launched the Operation Live Well (OLW) initiative. OLW focuses on six areas:

  • integrative wellness,
  • mental wellness,
  • nutrition,
  • physical activity,
  • sleep, and
  • tobacco-free living.

For each area, resources are offered to help individuals implement and maintain healthy lifestyles. These resources are a reminder that “physical and emotional/mental health are closely connected” and that “a comprehensive and integrated approach to wellness” is essential.

The previously launched Healthy Base Initiative (HBI) supports the efforts of OLW throughout the DoD. It helps individuals address heart health, tobacco use, and weight management and offers an online community via milSuite for people to connect and share their experiences. The community also features summaries of HBI initiatives, implementation recommendations and plans, status reports by installation, and population health outcome measures.

Together, these DoD initiatives can combat increased health care costs and lost duty days, and promote holistic well-being.
