Surgeon General Acts on Opioid Crisis

Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, M.D., M.B.A., has issued the first-ever Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health called Facing Addiction in America. This report reviews what we know about substance misuse and how you can use that knowledge to address substance misuse and related consequences.

Before releasing the report, Dr. Murthy mailed a letter and pocket card to 2.3 million doctors, nurses, dentists, and other clinicians asking them to help address America’s escalating opioid epidemic. It was the first time in the nearly 150-year history of the Office of the Surgeon General that such a letter was issued specifically to medical professionals calling them to action.

Dr. Murthy states he took these actions because of the magnitude and trajectory of the opioid epidemic. For more information on these and other initiatives undertaken by the Surgeon General, refer to Ending the Opioid Epidemic — A Call to Action.
